Ständerat rejects UN migration pact
Lower house to have final say on pact
Ständerat rejects UN migration pact
The Ständerat has rejected the UN migration pact. The decision was taken by 25 votes to 16, with one abstention. The pact was opposed by the right-wing SVP and EDU parties, as well as some members of the centre-right CVP party. The left-wing SP and Green parties supported the pact.
The pact is a non-binding agreement that sets out a framework for international cooperation on migration. It was adopted by the UN General Assembly in December 2018. The pact has been controversial in some countries, with some governments arguing that it is too soft on illegal immigration.
The Ständerat's decision means that the pact will not be submitted to a referendum in Switzerland. The lower house of parliament, the National Council, will now have the final say on the pact.
