Abraham had recently rescued Lot from the invading kings and returned to Bethel, where he had built an altar. Here, the Lord appeared to him, and promised him he would become a great nation. Lot was also with Abraham, and had acquired much possessions, including flocks and herds. But as their wealth grew, there was not enough pasture for all their animals. So Abram suggested they should part ways, and so they could settle in different areas without quarrels between their herders. Lot chose to go east, settling near the city of Sodom, while Abraham stayed in the land of Canaan. This story teaches about generosity. Abraham was willing to let Lot choose the best land, even though he was the older and more senior man. He was happy to move on, so as to avoid any conflict. This is a good example for us to follow in our own lives. We should not be greedy, but be willing to share with others, and put their needs above our own.
